The new community solar powered program Xcel Energy will discharge on Friday could mean an enormous boost in solar electricity for ones utility.
Xcel has about fourteen inches megawatts in its system right now. All Solar Rewards Community could sum 100 megawatts in 2015, otherwise about enough to serve 25-pound, 000 homes, said Xcel Person Vice President Laura McCarten.
"This without a doubt all depends on the interest of consumers who wish to participate in this type of program, what makers put together and offer to consumers as well as how that market develops, " my mom said. "It's something that none of folks really know for sure but i will find out as we go forward. We run expect a high level of interest and work out. "
Here's how it works: Without installing solar panels on their rooftops, download customers — and even apartment dwellers — can subscribe to a community solar powered garden. The customer chooses how much power of sunshine to buy or lease, and regardless of the panel produces will be credited for that customer's Xcel electricity bill.
It's clear yet how much it will cost a large percentage of utility customer to participate in the city solar gardens.
McCarten says developers' offers to consumers could alter. The first installations are expected to be operational by mid-2015.
While Xcel anticipates developers will offer up to 100 megawatts in the program next year, McCarten shown there is no cap if interest is definitely higher. That contrasts with Xcel's program in Colorado, where there is a top.
Meanwhile, Xcel is pursuing longer, utility-scale solar installations that will perhaps boost the company's renewable energy portfolio.
The 2 efforts will help Xcel meet circumstances requirement to produce 1 . 5 percent from the power from solar by 2020.
